Fortnite has captivated millions worldwide with its unique blend of action, strategy, and creativity. Since its launch in 2017, it has reshaped gaming culture, fostering a massive community through its battle royale format and frequent updates. However, as with all media, it is essential to evaluate Fortnite not only for its entertainment value but also for its alignment with Catholic virtues. Using Dr. Gans’ insights from Infinite Bandwidth and the Seven Media Keys, we will explore Fortnite’s impact on players and its potential for fostering or challenging virtuous living.

The First Media Key: Balance

The virtue of temperance is key to achieving balance in media consumption. The Catechism defines temperance as "the moral virtue that moderates the attraction to pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods" (CCC 1809). Fortnite’s exciting gameplay and competitive environment can easily lead to overindulgence. Dr. Gans notes, “We are called to develop healthy media habits that free us to be present to God and others” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 15). Players must set limits on their screen time to avoid letting the game dominate their lives. By striving for balance, Catholics can enjoy Fortnite as a recreational outlet without neglecting responsibilities or relationships.

The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness

Prudence, described as "right reason in action" (CCC 1806), helps us engage with media mindfully. Fortnite fosters teamwork and strategic thinking, but it is crucial to assess one’s motives for playing. Dr. Gans emphasizes the need to “ask not only what we are consuming but why we are consuming it” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 22). Are we using Fortnite to connect with others and build friendships, or are we using it as an escape from reality? Remaining aware of our intentions allows players to use Fortnite as a tool for positive interaction, aligning with Catholic values.

The Third Media Key: Dignity of the Human Person

Justice, defined as "the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor" (CCC 1807), is crucial in multiplayer games like Fortnite. While the game allows for collaboration and connection, the anonymity of online interactions can lead to toxic behavior. Dr. Gans warns, “The digital world can desensitize us to the dignity of the people we interact with, reducing them to usernames on a screen” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 30). By treating opponents and teammates with respect, players can reflect Catholic teachings on human dignity and turn Fortnite into a platform for building others up, not tearing them down.

The Fourth Media Key: Truth Filled

Fortitude, or the ability to remain steadfast in pursuing the good (CCC 1808), is vital for navigating Fortnite’s challenges. Players must think critically, adapt to changing situations, and persevere to succeed. Dr. Gans notes, “Games that demand effort and reward perseverance mirror the value of genuine accomplishment in the real world” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 47). Fortnite’s gameplay, especially in competitive and creative modes, highlights the importance of hard work, teamwork, and resilience—virtues that are essential for living out the Catholic faith.

The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring

The theological virtue of hope, which trusts in God’s promises and eternal life (CCC 1817), resonates with Fortnite’s emphasis on creativity. The game’s Creative Mode allows players to build intricate worlds, reflecting the joy of creation. Dr. Gans writes, “Media that inspires us to create reminds us of our role as co-creators with God” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 55). By fostering appreciation for beauty and imagination, Fortnite can inspire players to see God’s hand in their own creative abilities and the world around them.

The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed

Faith, described as the belief in God and His revelations (CCC 1814), can deepen through appreciation of skillful media. Fortnite exemplifies creative excellence, with its vibrant graphics, innovative mechanics, and constantly evolving content. Dr. Gans remarks, “Well-crafted media can point us toward the divine Creator by reflecting the creativity and order of His creation” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 63). By recognizing the care and detail that went into Fortnite’s design, players can develop gratitude for human ingenuity and God’s gifts of creativity.

The Seventh Media Key: Motivated by and Relevant to Experience

Charity, the virtue of loving God and neighbor (CCC 1822), should guide how Catholics engage with Fortnite’s competitive nature. While the game encourages rivalry, it also offers opportunities for mentorship and connection. Dr. Gans notes, “The best media fosters relationships and community, calling us to build bridges rather than barriers” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 75). By prioritizing kindness and generosity, players can create a positive culture within the game, making it a space for genuine fellowship.

Conclusion

Fortnite has the potential to be more than just a source of entertainment—it can be a platform for creativity, connection, and personal growth when approached with intentionality and virtue. As Dr. Gans states, “The media we consume should bring us closer to God and others, not distract us from them” (Infinite Bandwidth, p. 5). By integrating virtues like temperance, prudence, and charity, Catholics can use Fortnite as a tool for building community, expressing creativity, and sharing their faith in unique ways.
